Hello. I'm Beth Carroll. Welcome to New Hampshire Outlook. According to US Bureau of Prisons the prison population is growing across the country. And more and more of them are women. In fact, in 2003, women prisoners increased by 5-Percent, men by 2-point--7 percent. A Bedford social scientist wanted to know why. So, Dr. Alicen-J McGowan produced a documentary on some of the women at the Goffstown prison for women. We'll talk to Dr. McGowan in a moment. But first, a look at part one of her series. |

Joining me now to talk about the project is Alicen-J McGowan. Dr. McGowan is a visiting lecturer of criminal justice and psychology at U Mass Lowell. Children whose parents are incarcareted are often the forgotten victims. The absence of a parent can have a lasting influence on a child's life and learning. A program called "Project Storytime" works with parents behind bars to help them encourage their children's literacy development -- and also to promote family bonding. Through "Project Storytime," NHPTV conducts parenting workshops on family literacy and provides books for the parents to select for reading aloud. NHPTV also videotapes 15-minute segments of a parent reading aloud, and sends a videotape of the reading -- and the book that was read to the child. Joining us now to talk about the program is Pat Van Wagoner, NHPTV's Ready to Learn Coordinator. Q Pat: Walk us thru the process. How do you make the CONNECTION with parents and what's involved in getting video tapes to children? |

Q NHPTV's "Project Storytime" focus on the LAKES REGION CORRECTIONAL FACILITY in Laconia? Any plans to EXPAND the reach? Q Who's taking advantage of the program -- because it is voluntary? Q What do you hope to accomplish with the program? Q Do you target populations such as low-income families, or those with limited literacy? Q To those who might say --inmates shouldn't receive special privledges -- since they're being punished for taking away someone else's rights -- what would you SAY? Q What kind of advice do you give parents -- in their role as STORY TELLER? Q Project Storytime is a year-and-a-half old? How's it going, are you getting ANY FEEDBACK? Q Is there any way to know if parents are CONNECTING with their kids? Q Any personal stories that affected you in doing this assignment? Q I know you don't know why the INMATES are in jail -- you don't get into that. But, do they share information about their kids with you.
